TVD Fresh Track (...and 7" Giveaway) | New from Nicole Atkins

Nicole Atkins—who held the fort down here for a week last year in the same manner Laura Burhenn of The Mynabirds is doing this week—returns with her sophomore release Mondo Amore in January, 2011—and we've got the first track kicking around the internet (as of just yesterday) streaming below.

Nicole's currently giving the track away as a free download on her website, so head on over there to add the quite excellent 'Vultures' to your ipod.

What the rest of the internet doesn't have however is an advance 7" of 'Vultures' which we'll award to one of you in exchange for your comment to this posting. Stream the track above and offer your critique in the comments and the most insightful of the bunch will take home the 45.

We'll keep this one open for a week and choose our winner next Wednesday, 9/29. Remember to leave us a contact email address as well!

I've been waiting years to pack some more Atkins into my music collection! Chet Atkins - Picks On The Beatles? CHECK. Chet Atkins - Live At The Library Of Congress? CHECK. Nicole Atkins - Neptune City. CHECK. Nicole Atkins - BEHIND THE MUSIC DVD. DOESN'T EXIST. The Atkins Diet - audio book. CHECK. Luckily, if this new track is any indication, this new album will be a worthy addition to mine and others' collections of Atkins brilliance!

*extends hand Stephen Colbert-style* "Free 45, please!"

I bought "Neptune City" the day it came out and I love it, I am excited that Nicole is making another album. Vultures sounds like it is going to pick up were Neptune City left off.

I must say I loved Neptune City and I am very excited to hear that Nicole Atkins has decided to release a new album! Judging by this new song, It's going to be great. I guess below is less of a critique and more of a praise.

I believe Nicole has mentioned in interviews that she really loved some of the harder rock in her childhood, and it really shows in this new track. (I'm hesitant to say there's a Led Zeppelin vibe to this. When the Levee Breaks esque? Maybe not.) While it still retains the great use of a string section that we came to love in Neptune City, there is some driving electric guitar to accompany it. All this creates a great "wall of sound" feeling when it hits the chorus. I think my favorite part is when Nicole builds up the chorus near the end and really belts it out. Ear candy.

Anyway, great song and can't wait to hear the whole album. It can't come out soon enough! Keep making music! We can't get enough!

I think I've listened to Neptune City, oh, seven thousand times? Seriously. I think "the Way It Is" is at #1 on my most played in itunes. And I just put it on yet another mixtape because I am obsessed.

But anyway, she has been evolving over the course of the year, judging by the Daytrotter sessions stuff (which is incredible, even if any of it end up as b-sides), so I am crazy excited for the new album. Three months is too long to wait. So, you know... an advance would be nice. Haaaaaaa!

Killer tune, intense vocals and vibe. But should I beg for the disc? Nicole was once quoted in a magazine interview:
"... and no, I don't want to go over your house to see your record collection."

The dream was shattered. And now you want me to add another platter to the useless, mocking vinyl pile?

Nicole really puts out the finest songs in years. Best artist of the 2000's for sure! Vultures is no exception. I'ts got some crossover potential, but it stays true to Atkins' roots. She's done an excellent job polishing the song over the past year. Comparing it to the version she did at SXSW, it's evolved tremendously. I'll be first in line to buy Mondo Amore. Or first ONline, cause there are no more record stores :\

I absolutely adore Nicole's voice on any track. This song shows the different ranges of her voice so well, and is a perfect example of how talented she truly is. I cannot wait for the album, I already know most of the songs by heart just from seeing her play them so many times. Rock on Nicole!

If Brandi Carlile is the love of my musical life, then Nicole Atkins is my Sicilian mistress.

Her voice comes barreling out of the past like a great black wave, and you're powerless to do anything other than let it break over you again and again.

I can't help but listen to "Vultures" and imagine myself racing down some forgotten desert highway in jeans and a white t-shirt, a-la James Dean. It's a big damn rock song destined for the big screen, and I hope it sets Nicole's rising star ablaze.

Nicole, you make me proud to be from New Jersey. Seeing you perform live has been a true privilege. This sneak preview of Vultures is just a taste of the musical genius that is Mondo Amore. I can't wait for the album to come out and to see you live again. Thanks for the music!

I can't help but hear "Vultures" and think of Halloween. Nicole Atkins's noir pop always teases the spiritual, but "Vultures" is immersed in mysticism. The brooding bass line accompanies Atkins mixing her witch's brew before the soaring singalong chorus brings the ghosts of lost spirits into a frenzy. It's a glorious celebration of the upcoming fall season, and I can't wait to finally hear it live.

Vultures is a classic example of a tale of impending doom that you can't escape from. You know it's about to get dangerous and storm like crazy, yet you cannot turn away because you want to see what comes next! You end up with a chorus and bassline that haunt you for days and a thirst for more surprises that I am certain we will all find in "Mondo Amore"!

As Nicole's oldest fan, A.P.H.S. '61, I'm totally floored by this new song and can hardly wait for the album's release, hoping all the songs can live up to this one. She is truly a fantastic song writer and has the sexiest voice since Chrissie Hynde.

How's this for "cool enough"?: the other night I literally drove through Neptune City, New Jersey (singing the title track with my young daughters upon approaching the "Welcome to..." sign), then came home to find an e-mail from Nicole's website alerting the world to this kick-ass free download. Although initially my ears didn't groove on the "na na na-na-na" refrain (how many songs throughout history contain a variation on that theme?), the second time around I recognized and appreciated the pure Atkins style infused into the track. Nothing copycat about it. I eagerly await the remaining tracks.
