It's Paul Collins' Vinyl District Vinyl Giveaway!

Courtesy of Paul Collins himself and our friends over at Alive Records, we've pulled two gems from the vaults to offer you guys this week while we have Paul blogging with us.

We'll have two winners for this giveaway who will win both of the following:

The Nerves - Live At The Pirate's Cove, Cleveland OH, May 26th 1977

Remastered from an analog tape recently discovered by Jack Lee in an unmarked box, this 1977 previously unreleased performance showcases the trio live in Cleveland during their infamous Magic Blistering Tour.

Comes with inner sleeve featuring a collage with Nerves memorabilia, rare photos, notes by Jack Lee, and Paul Collins original tour diary entry related to the show.

All the classics are here, "Hanging On The Telephone," "Walking Out On Love," "When You Find Out," "Stand Up And Take A Good Look," etc, all delivered with blistering energy in front of a small audience of enlightened scensters that included Dave Thomas of Pere Ubu, and with Devo as the opening band.

This is a VINYL ONLY release on YELLOW VINYL, LIMITED to 500 copies.

Breakaways - Walking Out On Love/The Lost Sessions

After spending nearly 30 years gathering dust in a closet The Breakaways makes its worldwide debut!

Born in 1978 after the demise of The Nerves, this short lived combo was formed by Paul Collins and Peter Case, just prior to the formation of The Plimsouls and The Beat. "Walking Out On Love - The Lost Sessions" compiles all the band's known material, including studio recordings, demos, and acoustic rehearsals.

"This is the sound of pop on the streets of Los Angeles circa 1978."
—Paul Collins

"I'd forgotten these tapes even existed. We were definitely homing in on something."
Peter Case

Enter to win the pair of unearthed vinyl gems by simply leaving a comment to this post and let us know why you deserve to win these classics. The two most convincing pleas who leave us some contact info (which for some reason is typically the hurdle) will be awarded the vinyl.

You've got until next Tuesday (6/1) so make 'em good!

Hey, hook me up with these killer LPs cause I will listen to them ... FOREVER. And in my will, I will be sure to leave a note to have them play up in space to reach the extra terrestrial intelligence. Now doesn't that sound like a great experiment in science? Reach me at ashley@hookedonwax.com if you wanna rock my world. Love, Ashley!

I cannot say I deserve to win over anyone but I really truly love collecting vinyl and getting things that are off beat and having these two LP's would be a freaking awesome addition to my small but growing collection.

I first heard the Nerves “Hanging on the Telephone” on KALX in Berkeley in 1980. So much better than the cover version, I had to have it! But even after years of looking in record stores (with real records) I never found a copy of the EP. I eventually ended up with three quarters of it by getting the Trouser Press America Underground tape and the DIY Come Out and Play CD. Finally Penniman records re-released a 25th anniversary version on vinyl and I now own my very own copy. I’ve always regretted missing the Nerves play in concert. Last year I got to see Paul and his band play and I can’t see how any band could be more fun and exciting. But if you sent me a copy of the long lost Nerves concert recording, I would know for sure! The aura seems pretty strong on this w/ today being my birthday and my being an Ohio expat. Attended many a great concert in Cleveland during those college years, unfortunately missed the Nerves. This would be a great addition to my vinyl collection.

There are four primary reasons why I am deserving of some serious Paul Collins largesse:

1)I’m a long time fan. I fondly remember a Paul Collins Beat show at Dearly Departed Desperados in Georgetown—probably 1981 (the show I remember, the date I don’t). The Brains of Money Changes Everything fame opened the show.

2) A friend and I have had a nearly 30 year debate about the remarkable song That’s What Life is All About. Is the lyric “what good is going on with the other,” or “what good is one heart without the other” or “what good is one arm without the other.” I’m not making this up.

3) I fully recognize that Afton Place was the best song of 2007.

4) I’m old and old guys never win prizes.

These guys are the founding vanguard of LA power-pop! A framework for the new wave guitar driven rock of the Plimsouls! "Hangin on the Telephone" is a great tune, I had no idea it was Blondie cover of the Nerves...awesome! Would love to get my hands on these LP power-pop gems!!!
