I was 16 in 1976 and spent the year with a radio glued to my ear, so believe me when I say that even with "Torn Between Two Lovers"--*especially* with it, perhaps--this list perfectly captures 1976 as she was heard on the radio. You've got your superstars (Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart), your glorious one-shots (Starbuck, Wild Cherry, Elvin Bishop), your teen faves (Kiss, Frampton), your romantic weepers (Eric Carmen, Barry Manilow), your TV themes (John Sebastian), your proto-funk (Wild Cherry), your indescribables (Gary Wright), and the year's biggest single (Elton and Kiki). Well done.

One quibble, though: "Take a Chance on Me" was a hit in the summer of 1978. The quintessential ABBA record from 1976 would be "Fernando," I think--a completely ridiculous record that seems to be the case of a Swedish group singing about the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), and from the Mexican side at that. Completely ridiculous--and absolutely AM-radio-glorious at the same time.

Crikey! You're right about ABBA...it's been yanked and will reappear on Thursday for 1978's post...

You are awsome. Your list is awsome. I am awed...but fortunately not shocked, which would be something else entirely. Anyway, I digress. I am reeling in the years. Thanks.

Wanna feel old?

I was born in 1976, and every other day, *I* feel old.

This is my era...Torn Between Two Lovers was by Mary MacGregor, not Helen Reddy. We drove almost 1,000 miles to Florida at Xmas time that year and this song was played about 1,000 on the way down there. Great post, classic AM memories.

"Torn Between..." 1,000 times? Ouch. That simple, evil melody would have had me hopping out the window onto I-95.

Otherwise, awesome post, thanks!

Oh, man. From Eric Carmen during a college internship as the year dawned through Starbuck during the summer I moved out of the folks' house to Elton and Kiki during a New Year's Eve at my girlfriend's folks' small farm, this puts me right back there. Great selection from a memorable year! (And I think Mary MacGregor has to be there to make the portrait of the year complete.)

Who says we don't listen to our readers? "Convoy" added to '76, the year of its release. ...breaker 1-9, good buddy.
